MPGN: About the Connect Limits

About Our Connect Limit Policy December 12, 1994
There have been a number of people recently that have expressed a concern over the connection limits that we impose on the Gaming Archive. Hopefully, this note will explain the reasons we were forced to implement such low limits at this time. As a business that provides low-cost, interactive multiple player gaming entertainment, we have to dedicate most of our resources to that activity. Let's be honest, if it weren't for our subscribers playing the games we provide on our service, the Gaming Archive couldn't exist. This isn't meant as a snide remark, but quite honestly the bare truth of the matter. Admittedly, the amount of bandwidth we're permitted at the moment is small, but not that much smaller than some sites (There a large number of sites that only allow five connections, for instance). Also, because the majority of our subscribers are active during the late night hours, we allow more connections during the day (This backwards arrangement has confused a small number of people, perhaps this needs further clarification in our documents). We understand the frustration of low connect limits. There are times, however, when slots are available or the Archive is completely idle (particularly during the day, but sometimes at night, too). Our common recommendation is to use the Archive during our daylight hours (6:00am to 6:00pm Eastern Time, US) if at all possible. The future of the Gaming Archive looks brighter, however. Sometime during the first half of 1995, MPG-Net will be acquiring a T1 line to the internet (exactly when is unknown). This will mean a substantial increase in our allotted bandwidth, extra features added (such as a World-Wide Web server) as well as an increase in the number of types of games we cover. Stay tuned to the Archive or the newsgroup rec.games.frp.announce for updates. Comments, suggestions and questions can always be directed to us at ftp-maint@MPGN.COM. Please don't hesitate to send us a note on your opinions (good or bad), they're very valuable in helping get a feel for how we're doing. Sincerely, David E.
