About
The Seven-Sided Die is my contribution to the discussions in the roleplaying community. That means I’m here to listen as much as to talk. Tell me I’m wrong, right, being stupid, and (most importantly) why that is. I read blogs that inspire me all the time, and if I can occasionally write something that inspired just one other person then I’m achieving my goal. If “post-Forge Diaspora” means anything to you, I’m not it, but I’m part of the gaming community that has been successfully proselytised to. I’m a ripple from that grand experiment.
I’m a geek of many stripes, though roleplaying games have always been one of the wider and brighter ones. I’ve GMed for most of my gaming career and been a player far too infrequently. Like most people I started with one of the editions of D&D, and I’ve been branching out from there. My discovery several years ago of the game theory coming out of The Forge was a personal gaming renaissance. My taste in gaming systems since then far outstrips my time and the interest of my local gaming group. I hope to change that, one way or the other.
As a new father I’m particularly interested in roleplaying games designed for kids, and the indie RPG community is creating a lot of interesting things in that vein. I’m also interested in how to play when time and energy is precious, without circling the wagons and retreating into a local maximum of just-good-enough gameplay.
I’m currently running a 1st edition AD&D campaign with a drifted experience system that puts the focus on character traits and goals rather than killing orcs and taking their pie. After this I’m looking forward to trying a game using either Solar System or Burning Wheel, depending on the group’s appetite for crunch. In and around those I’m planning on playing some shock:, and would like to run a one-shot of Shadows. I’ll also be trying to spread around the GM’s hat, and I’m interested in learning how to cultivate GMship among players.
